#ABOUT PRAYAGIRI DONGARGARH
Located in Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, Pragyagiri is a sacred Buddhist Pilgrimage Site. Initiated by Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Raja Kamakhya Narayan, it houses a grand 30-foot golden statue of Lord Buddha on a hilltop at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level. It has become a major destination for spiritual seekers, tourists, and devotees alike.
Every year on February 6, an International Buddhist Conference is organized here. Buddhist monks and followers from India and abroad participate in large numbers. The event promotes the teachings of Lord Buddha: peace, compassion, meditation, and spiritual awakening.

The 50-feet tall Pragyagiri Buddha Statue, installed on Pragyagiri Mountain in Dongargarh, was created by the renowned sculptor Nelson Munshi, who is also credited with crafting several other large and significant works including the 37-feet Vivekananda statue at Neelabh Park in Raipur, as well as important replicas such as the Pillar of Ashoka and the statue of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi at the State Assembly in Raipur. Over the years, Nelson’s remarkable contribution to art and culture has been widely recognized through numerous awards and honours, most notably the prestigious Padma Shri conferred by the President of India in 2008, the State Award “Raja Chakradhar Samman” in the field of Music and Arts from the Government of Chhattisgarh on 1st November 2010, and the Nehru Award for excellence from Bhilai Steel Plant, which he won three times.
In addition to these, he has also been the recipient of several other accolades including the Srijan Shree Award, Hai Thakur Award, Mini Mata Kala Bhim Award, Dr. Khubchand Baghel Samman, the Regional Award “Chhattisgariya Sable Badiya Award,” the Kala Guru Samman, and many more, firmly establishing him as one of the most celebrated sculptors in the country.
